June marked the 44th LGBTQ Pride Month since the Stonewall Riots in 1969. This summer, some states were celebrating a record year for the legalization of same-sex marriage, which was signed into law in Rhode Island, Minnesota, Delaware, Washington, and Maine.
While people have criticized Pride for its evolution from protest to parade, for many LGBTQ+ people who are living politicized lives, Pride comes as a time to breathe, to affirm, and to celebrate. One Brown student (’15) spoke with relief after attending the parades in New York City, “Pride is really something. So much expression of love from a community that experiences so much hate.” Brown University students have been posting photos with #Pride on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as they celebrate queerness across the country.
