19-year-old illustrator Annabelle Hayford came up with #DrawingWhileBlack, encouraging Black artists on Twitter to share their work. Check out ForHarriet’s roundup of 15 Black women artists who caught their eye.

Davina Nylander writes for gal-dem about her rise as a dark-skinned Black girl:

“I don’t know what it is that changed within me, but one day I decided that I was done. I decided to reclaim my self worth because it doesn’t belong to anybody else. My thoughts did not exist in a vacuum: I was experiencing first-hand, the effects of a longstanding and steadfast societal attitude towards darker complexions; an attitude that transcends culture and place and time. By conforming to this, I was placing my self-love in the hands of others. Finally I was ready to rise above it.”

Erin Sinclair of Afropunk writes, “The real MVP of ‘Stranger Things’ Season 2 was Erica Sinclair’s #blackgirlmagic”: “Erica wasn’t out in these streets chasing Demigorgons with these white kids and when Lucas’ lil’ friends were disrupting her day, she reclaimed her time.”

Cultural writer and artist Ashleigh Shackelford created the Fat Census, “an analytical tool that we created to ask fat people about their experiences to create and provide more data on fatphobia through an intersectional lens.” Learn more and take the survey here!
